Creative Writing
Creative Writing Transition Year
“We are all apprentices in the craft of writing where no one ever becomes a master.” Ernest Hemingway
The purpose of creative writing is to provide students with the opportunity to experiment with, and engage with, different writing styles, genres and techniques. The emphasis is on the writing process rather than the writing outcome. Students are encouraged to try various types of creative writing to allow them to identify their strengths and the areas that need to be developed. This is done in a variety of ways: individual, paired and collaborative writing is promoted.
So far creative writing students have produced an eclectic mix of writing, from the traditional to the far-fetched! Transition year students, writing collaboratively, produced refreshingly original poetry, using the paintings of Salvador Dali as their inspiration. Incorporating other elements of the Arts is fundamental to the students’ appreciation of creative writing. At present another group is working on a fantasy writing themed project. They were given specific criteria but essentially they are required to create an alternative reality so we’ll have to wait and see how they turn out…
