Lyon trip meeting for 2nd year parents on Wednesday 29th February at 7pm

Ms Mc Carthy and myself are holding a meeting on Wednesday 29th February at 7pm in the library in relation to the Lyon trip which will take place from Monday 5th to Monday 12th March.
We will give parents the latest information on the trip and some important documents. It will be the occasion for parents (and students) to ask all the questions they want before the trip.
The flight details are as follows :
Monday 5th March
Departure DUBLIN 1pm arrive Lyon 4.05pm

Monday 12th March
Departure LYON 4.45pm arrive Dublin 6pm

Meeting Scheduled for Parents / Guardians of Special Needs Children, including Gifted / Exceptionally able Children

Dear Parents / Guardians,

Following on our email / post on 23 January 2012, we are planning on having the first meeting of this group on next Tues 28 February @ 8pm in the School Library.

If you are interested in coming along, you would be most welcome.

To recap, the objective of the group is for parents to learn from each other and share suggestions regards experiences that any other parents will have had with Students in the above categories in Secondary School.

Our expectation is that there is a wealth of knowledge amongst the parents themselves, and it would be good to able to share this, particularly amongst parents of younger students in the school. Parents will be able to pick up tips from parents of older children, who are further advanced along the secondary school route.

These could be practical suggestions – perhaps such things as how to go about getting special accommodations for students in exams, what courses parents have found useful in improving social skills etc, etc. – Really it is whatever topics the parent group themselves think is relevant.

Presentation for parents and guardians of Transition Year students on: Senior Cycle Options & Subject Choices

Tuesday February 28th 2012, 8.00 till 9.00pm in the Hunter Theatre

The purpose of the talk is to help parents and guardians better understand:

• Program choice for Leaving Certificate: Leaving Certificate Established (LCE), Leaving Certificate Vocational Program (LCVP) and Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA).
• Subject choice for Leaving Certificate.

The students will have received a similar presentation earlier that day as part of their TY ‘Lecture’ module.

Second Year Short Story Writing Competition 2012

Are you a budding Roald Dahl or JK Rowling? If so, then why not enter the Second Year Short Story Writing Competition 2012.

The competition is open to all 2nd Year students. There are no restrictions on story title, theme, style or genre – the only limit is the imagination (and the word count!) Compositions must be between 800 – 1200 words.

How to enter

Writers must submit their entry to their English teacher.
Entries must be carefully typed.
Entries must include the title of the story and the name of the writer.
The story must be the complete and original work of the writer.
Spell Check is mandatory for all entries. Writers must proof-read their work before submitting.
Writers may be asked to email a copy of their story.
A selection of short stories will be printed in a Short Story Anthology later in the year.

Newpark Mock Exam Timetable 2012

Please note the current Exam Regulations are as follows

Know when your exam starts and be there ten minutes before the time. Latecomers will not be admitted, but will be asked to go to the office and sign in.
Have the pens, pencils, maths instruments or any other equipment needed with you. No borrowing.
No talking or communicating during the exam. If you talk or communicate your script will be signed by the teacher in charge and cancelled immediately.
You are required to stay until the end of the exam for which you are timetabled. If you finish early you may hand up your script and study for your next exam.
Visits to the bathroom are very disruptive and are not readily entertained. Students are allowed out only at the discretion of the teacher in charge, and will not be allowed out during the first half hour or the last half hour of each exam.
Bags and coats are to be left at the front or rear of the exam hall.
All mobile phones, radios, walkmans, Ipods, MP3 players etc. and earphones must be switched off and left in schoolbags during exams.
Drinks of bottled water only allowed in the exam hall.

Newpark Scientists at the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition

Well done to Anna Porter on winning 1^st prize for her category ‘Chemical, Physical and Mathematical Science’ at the BT Young Scientist competition in the RDS this January 2012. Anna’s project ‘Glowing Crystals’ attracted much attention both at the RDS and here in school as many classes observed her work meticulously in the science lab. Ms. Hannan and Ms. Clarke wish her well in her next venture to SCIfest.

Sian Demery, Madison Porter and Manon Gevers working with Ms Grant also attracted much interest at the RDS with their project ‘Examining the effect of Hormone Levels on Saliva during the Menstrual Cycle’. Well done to the young scientists for all their hard work and we hope this will inspire more Newpark students to enter next time round.

French DELF exam on Wednesday 25th January for ES 4th and 5th year students

European Section 4th and 5th Year students will take their DELF exams in the Alliance Francaise in Dublin.
Students are expected to be there 30 minutes before the start of the exams, which means at 12.00.
They have to bring their notification as well as their passport.

French Mock Aural exams will take place on Wednesday 25th (3rd Years) and Thursday 26th January (6th Years)

The mock aural exams will take place during classes and as follow :
Wednesday 25th January
3rd Year French Aural exam : 12.35-1.10pm
Thursday 26th January
6th year French Aural exam : 11.25am-12.35pm

ES 2nd year students go to Lyon from 5th March to 12th March

The flights to Lyon are now booked.
After welcoming their French correspondents last November, ES 2nd year students will go to Lyon in March (5-12th).
Reminders :
Please check from now that your passport is still valid, otherwise you’ll have to apply for a new one (it takes 10 days through the passport Express Service and 8 weeks if you make your application by normal post)
