Summer exams : French oral exam for 2nd year students on Thursday 17th and Friday 18th May

The French oral exams will take place on Thursday 17th and Friday 18th May.
The examiner will be Ms Larras.
Students have 10 questions and 3 role plays to prepare.
They should be at the exam about 10 min before their allocated time.
The information on the room will be given next week. Please check the noticeboards near the library.

Summer exams : French aural exam for 1st, 2nd and 5th year students on Tuesday 15th May

The French aural exam for 1st, 2nd and 5th years will take place in class on Tuesday 15th May.
Students should practice as much as they can this weekend and be prepared for next week.
It is important that they are on time as the exam lasts 40 minutes.
Reminder : answers must be given in English

Help Cherie Walk

Dear Students, Parents and Guardians,

Five year old Cherie Anderson, sister of Christel (first year) and Claudia (fifth Year) suffers from Cerebral Palsy. She needs surgery to cure the aches and pains which she suffers on a daily basis and to allow her to walk unaided, freeing her from the need to use leg splints, a wheelchair and a walker. The surgery Cherie needs is not available here and necessitates a trip to St Louis Children’s Hospital, Missouri, USA. This will take place this July.

The financial implications for the Anderson family are considerable (a total of €60.000 is needed) and Newpark are joining in the campaign to help Cherie walk, aiming to cast the net as widely as possible with the help of students and parents and the wider school community. You can help in any of three ways;

Sponsor the fifth year students who are running in the Women’s Mini Marathon on June Bank Holiday Monday. Sponsorship forms are available from the library and from fifth year students.
Support the bag packing which will be taking place in Tesco in Nutgrove from Thurs 10th to Sat 12th May
Buy/sell “Help Cherie Walk” wrist bands at a cost of €2 each which first year students will be selling.

DELL guest speakers, Joan Byrne (EMEA Services development manager) and Reginald Walsh (Global learning and development manager), are coming on Monday 30th April to present the programme entitled “IT is not just for geeks” to 4th and 5th year students

‘IT is not just for Geeks’ is a programme Dell has developed for High School students to help raise awareness about Careers in Technology.
IT is a very large employer in the Global economy, and global figures are showing that job growth in the IT and engineering sector is very significant, in some cases up to four times that of other sectors. Dell alone employs over 105,000 people Worldwide. We have historically seen large numbers of suitable graduates for this sector which in turn has helped to attract such companies to Dell. However in recent times fewer students have been opting for subjects that would ultimately equip them for careers in technology. This is especially the case for girls, with the result that the gender mix is often as high as 80/20 male / female, which is very different to other countries like the U S, and is a concern to many of us in the industry, who value diverse teams.

DELL has developed a short program that is designed to get students to think differently about careers in IT and Engineering. It also covers some basic facts about how to be successful in a work environment, and what you can do as a student to better prepare yourself for the world of work. It is addressed to for high school students who may not have chosen their final year subjects or who have not yet decided on their 3rd level courses.

The programme will be presented in the library to 5th years from 11.45am to 1.05pm and to 4th years from 1.45 to 3.05pm.

François Sarano, a French oceanographer, professional diver and co-writer of the film Oceans, is coming to Newpark on Monday 23rd April to talk to European Section students

On Sunday 22nd April, Earth Day will be celebrated in Dublin like across the world. On this occasion, and to start the celebrations of Dublin City of Science, the crew of the French film Oceans is coming to Dublin and organising an outdoor screening in Temple Bar (the first screening of the film in Ireland) with the cooperation of UCD Imagine Science Films and the French Embassy.

The European Section is delighted to welcome on Monday 23rd of April François Sarano who co-wrote the film and has been it Science adviser. The film received the oscar for Best documentary in 2011.
François Sarano is orginally from Marseille; he has a Ph.D. in oceanography and is a professional diver, former research director of the Deep Ocean Odyssey Program and former scientific adviser of Jacques-Yves Cousteau. He has dived with white sharks more than 30 times. He participated in over 20 expeditions around the world on board Cousteau’s flagship Calypso. He is also the co-founder of Longitude 181 Nature with Vincent Ohl.
Longitude 181 Nature is a great organisation promoting nature discovery, people and traditions. With former chief diver and Calypso captain Albert Falco as its president, Longitude 181 Nature wishes to show the fantastic biological and cultural diversity of our world so that everybody can share our planet in a sustainable and fair way.

It’s a great opportunity for students, particularly for those who have a special interest in Sciences, to ask François Sarano questions and share his passion for the oceans. The presentation will take place in the library from 1.45pm to 3.05pm.
