Sports

Newpark’s excellent facilities contribute to the school’s vibrant sports culture where the key feature is participation by all. In a world of increasingly sedentary lifestyles, Newpark is committed to providing a high quality P.E. programme complemented by a wide range of extra-curricular sporting activities.

All 1st and 2nd Year students in Newpark participate in 4 periods of P.E. per week. Students at Newpark can participate in the following extra curricular sports:

Rugby

There are 1st Year, 2nd Year, Junior and Senior rugby teams for boys in Newpark. Each team trains twice a week and participate in regular matches while the Junior and Senior team compete in Leinster League and Cup competitions. Matches usually take place on a Wednesday after school and Saturday mornings but can take place on other days.

Hockey

There are 1st Year, Minor, Junior and Senior hockey teams for both boys and girls in Newpark. There are twice weekly training sessions for each team. All teams participate in Leinster League and Cup competitions. Matches for boys take place on Wednesday afternoons while matches for girls take place on Saturday mornings, although some matches can be scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.

Basketball

Basketball is increasing in popularity every year in Newpark. There are 1st Year, 2nd Year, U16 and U19 teams for both boys and girls. All teams participate in Leinster League and Cup competitions. Matches usually take place after school on different days.

Athletics

Newpark has a winter and summer athletics programme run by the coach Gormlaith Ormond. During the winter months students participate in cross country training and compete in cross country races. During the summer term students train in all the athletic track and field events and compete in the annual All Ireland Community and Comprehensive Schools Athletics Meeting that takes place in Santry Stadium, usually at the beginning of May. Students of all athletic abilities are encouraged to participate.

Swimming

Newpark has an excellent 25 metre pool and all students participate in swimming during their mainstream P.E. classes. Newpark also enters Swimming Meets throughout the Year and students are encouraged to take part. Newpark Swimming Galas are also held during the school year at which Newpark students compete with their fellow students. Newpark students are permitted to swim every morning before classes start between 8-8.30am every morning and every Wednesday afterschool.

Cricket

There are two cricket teams for girls in Newpark – a 1st Year team and a Junior Team (for 2nd and 3rd Years). Both teams play in the Leinster Cricket Union league and cup competitions and train twice a week during the summer term. This is a new sport in Newpark although it is really only the revival of an old tradition as both the Avoca and Kingstown Schools played cricket. With the help of the Leinster Schools Cricket Branch and Merrion Cricket Club, there are plans to introduce the sport for boys in the future.

Tennis

Tennis in Newpark is played as part of the PE curriculum, particularly in Transition year during the Leisure & Recreation module. In summer term we participate in inter school competitions. Both Carraig Tennis club and Newtownpark Tennis club kindly provide access to their facilities.

Newpark competes in the Leinster Senior Boys Tennis Cup and the Leinster Minor  and Junior Girls Tennis Cup. In May 2011 Newpark Senior Boys were crowned Leinster Division 2 champions. Read more on the victory and see the photographs here
